GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- There's an effort underway to save the Brown County Community Gardens program.

Funding issues have threatened the program each year.

Tuesday the Hmong Community Center presented a check for $3,000 to open the Community Garden Fund.

It's an endowment housed within the Green Bay Community Foundation.

The goal is for the gardens to become self-sufficient.

Donors say the Hmong community has a history of gardening and want to continue growing within the Brown County community.

"Community gardens are part of our life and we want to continue to do that," said Wa Yai Thao. "We need a lot of education, a lot of support from the community to help the Hmong. The Hmong cannot do it alone but we will need the entire community to help."

The goal is to raise $10,000 over the next year and half.

Community members can contribute to the cause. Checks can be made out to the "GGBCF Community Garden Fund" and sent to 320 N. Broadway Street, Suite 260, Green Bay, WI 54303.
